Portchester Sailing Club is located in the upper reaches of Portsmouth Harbour, adjacent to Portchester Castle.

Founded in 1928, the club boasts a large clubhouse, 200 moorings, and a spacious boat park for dinghies during the summer and yachts during the winter.

The club caters for dinghy sailors, yacht sailors and fishermen, supported by a great social programme.

Whatever your level of interest in sailing and leisure boating, Portchester Sailing Club has something to offer you.

Bembridge Rally 16th August

Rally to Bembridge – 16 August 2008

Bembridge is a compact and pretty harbour, well sheltered from most winds and with plenty of facilities for visitors. Yachts are accommodated at Duver Marina on the north side pontoons and rafting will be necessary at busy times. The Harbour Master has been told of the Portchester Rally but, unfortunately, reservations are not taken so early arrival is a good idea to get a good spot.

The entrance to the harbour is restricted by tides and it is recommended that entry for a 1.5m draught is 2.5hrs before High Water – HW at Bembridge on the Saturday is 12.20 BST.

The marina barbecue has been booked for Saturday night so don’t forget the sausages. We hope to meet up with “cruisers” new, old and all ages - see you all there!

I'll huff and I'll puff...

It was windy. And gusty. Yet lots of boats were still keen to race the Combined Harbour Regatta on Saturday. First off were the Cruisers who outnumbered the other fleets, and shot off up the harbour with a long course to Bedenham Pier. Harway SC's Pink Lime, managed to steal (yet another) victory followed by Blue Shark and Kerry J, both also from Hardway. First PSC boat was Beltana in fourth by the smallest of margins from Scramasax (fifth), leaving Steve Freeman wondering what he has to do to win a race!

The Victory's were small in numbers (9) but were vocal at the prizegiveing and social, and are as ever, always welcome. However we only ever know them as their sail numbers. Fortunately they seem to know each other by first names, so who are we to argue.

The dinghy fleet was hotly contested in the fitful breezes and short chop. Virtually everybody was in the drink at some stage before the start, but at the off, a healthy fleet started the racing with Chris Davies and Pedro Lego in a Laser 2000 winning finely from Paul Bayliss in his RS700. Race two saw Bayliss' halyard fail at the top mark, leaving the win to Chris and Pete again in a depleted fleet consisting of only them, Rob Eastwoods RS200, John Powell's RS 600 and a battling but worthy Joe Simmonds in his Topper. These all finished in those order for the CHR results.

The fleet plus hanger-oners were entertained by The Caws Bros. and Steve served BBQ for two and a half hours until the entire contents of the fridge and freezer were eaten.

Following such a superb day, it was a bit of an anticlimax for the final day of the SuperCup on Sunday to be cancelled due to even stronger and gustier winds.

This left Chris and Ingrid Davies (along with Pete Legg as stand in crew) as overall winners of the series.

That was the Windy Weekend that Was
Written by Paul Bayliss

A windy few days to really blow the cobwebs of the summer away last weekend.

Five days of sailing translated as five days of exhileration and fun in a F5-6! Wednesday and Friday dinghy sailing was fast and furious, just as well it was on the top of the tide. Thurdays Cruiser Evening race was "fresh to frightening", but Reg and Elva Sillence in Beltana were unpeturbed and cleaned up in Beltana to take their second win of the series, and the overall series lead.

The weekend of Round the Islands was equally blowy. The big one was contested by nearly 1900 boats, amongst them 8 PSC competitors. Channel Ghost came out as victors after the PSC handicaps had been mercurially applied. Well sailed to all who finished - it was a tough one.

The other RTI race, the Portsea Cruise, demands slightly more benign conditions so was regretfully cancelled. Enthusiasts for the silghtly wacky, keep an eye our for next years event. Should be good fun.
